Vatican City, or the Holy See, became an independent state in 1929, though it has been the home of the Pope, the leader of the Catholic Church, since 1378. St Peter’s Basilica houses the tomb of the rst Pope, the apostle St Peter, who was crucied and buried there. Other attractions include the Sistine Chapel, the Vatican Gardens and the Vatican Museums.
